Diwali Sale Checklist for Your Online Store (2026 Edition)
Festive traffic can crash a WooCommerce store, break checkout and burn your ad budget. A week-by-week checklist to get your eCommerce website ready before Diwali 2026.
Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November this year, with Dhanteras two days before. For most Indian online stores, the next six weeks bring in a big chunk of the year's revenue. Gifting, sweets and dry fruits, home décor, fashion, electronics, all of it peaks now.
It's also when websites fall over. We've seen it enough times: a store runs its biggest ad campaign of the year, traffic jumps, and the checkout page starts timing out on the one evening it matters most. The Flipkarts and Amazons have entire teams for this. You probably have yourself and maybe one developer.
This is the checklist we run for eCommerce clients before the festive season. It's written for WooCommerce stores, because that's what most small Indian brands use, but nearly everything applies to Shopify or a custom store too.
Six weeks out (now): the foundations
Check your hosting can take the load
Shared hosting that copes with 50 visitors a day can collapse at 500 at once. Ask your hosting provider, or your developer, three questions:
- How many concurrent visitors can the current plan realistically handle?
- Can we upgrade temporarily for October–November and downgrade afterwards?
- Is there a CDN in front of the site? (Cloudflare's free plan is a solid start.)
If you're on a ₹199/month shared plan and planning to spend ₹1 lakh on ads, move to a proper VPS or managed WooCommerce hosting now, not the week before Dhanteras. Migrations need testing time. Our hosting guide for India compares the options.
Update everything, then freeze
Update WordPress, WooCommerce, your theme and all plugins now, while there's time to fix whatever breaks. Then, from about two weeks before Diwali, freeze: no updates, no new plugins, no "small design changes" until the season is over. Most festive-season outages we've fixed were caused by an update someone ran in a hurry.
Take a full backup and test the restore
A backup you've never restored isn't really a backup. Take a full backup (files and database), restore it on a staging copy, and check it works. Make sure automatic daily backups are running and stored off the server, in Google Drive, S3 or Dropbox.
Four weeks out: speed and checkout
Speed-test your key pages on mobile
Run your home page, top category page, a popular product and the checkout through PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab. Look at Largest Contentful Paint. If it's over 3 seconds, fix it now:
- Compress product images to WebP. Most stores we audit have 1–3 MB product photos straight from the camera.
- Remove plugins you don't use. Every store seems to have three abandoned "popup" or "slider" plugins.
- Turn on page caching for everything except cart, checkout and my-account pages.
We go into detail in speeding up WordPress for Core Web Vitals.
Test checkout like a customer
Place real test orders on a mobile phone, over mobile data, not office Wi-Fi. Try every payment method you offer:
- UPI (both the QR code and the intent flow that opens GPay or PhonePe)
- Debit and credit cards
- Net banking
- Cash on delivery, if you offer it
- EMI or Pay Later, if enabled
Check that the order confirmation email and SMS or WhatsApp message arrive, and that the order shows up correctly in your admin. Then refund the test orders.
Also talk to your payment gateway. Razorpay, Cashfree, PhonePe PG and PayU all see huge volumes during Diwali. Make sure your account is fully KYC-verified and that your transaction limits won't be hit on your best day.
Fix the pincode checker and delivery promises
"Will it reach before Diwali?" is the number one question festive shoppers ask. Put a pincode checker on product pages, set a clear last date for Diwali delivery, and show it prominently. Check it with your courier partner (Shiprocket, Delhivery, etc.). They'll have their own festive cut-off dates, and those are earlier than you'd guess.
Three weeks out: offers and content
Set up coupons carefully
Coupon mistakes cost real money. Before going live:
- Set usage limits (per customer and overall)
- Set expiry dates and times, and remember WooCommerce uses your site's timezone setting, so check it's set to Asia/Kolkata
- Exclude sale items if you don't want discounts to stack
- Test each coupon with a real cart
One mistake we see every year is a "DIWALI50" code meant for one category that ends up working on the whole store.
Build a proper festive landing page
Don't just put a banner on the home page. Make a dedicated Diwali sale or gifting page with:
- A clear headline and the offer
- Products organised the way people shop for gifts: "Under ₹999", "For parents", "Corporate gifting", "Last-minute gifts"
- The delivery cut-off date
- Fast loading, with no autoplay video
This gives your ads a focused place to land and gives Google a page to rank for festive searches. The principles in our landing page design guide apply directly.
Plan corporate gifting separately
For many D2C brands, bulk corporate orders are the quiet profit centre of the festive season. Offices start ordering from mid-October. A simple "Corporate gifting" page with a bulk enquiry form (quantity, budget per gift, delivery date, custom branding yes/no) can bring in orders worth more than weeks of retail sales. Make sure those enquiries go straight to someone who answers quickly. Our WhatsApp lead automation post shows one way to do that.
Two weeks out: tracking and support
Check your tracking before spending on ads
If you run Meta or Google ads, confirm that purchase events fire correctly with the right order value. Place a test order and check it shows up in GA4 (under real-time events), in Meta Events Manager, and in Google Ads conversions. Running festive ads with broken tracking means you can't tell which campaign is making money, and the ad platforms can't optimise either.
The GA4 and Search Console guide covers the basics of conversion tracking.
Prepare for customer questions
Write quick replies now for the questions you'll answer hundreds of times:
- "When will my order arrive?"
- "Can I change my address?"
- "Payment deducted but order not placed." (This happens with UPI more than anyone likes. Know exactly how your gateway handles it.)
- "Do you have gift wrapping?"
- "Can I get a GST invoice?"
Put the main answers on an FAQ page too. Each question answered on the site is one less WhatsApp message on Dhanteras night.
Start the freeze
From here until after Diwali, no plugin updates, no theme changes and no experiments on the live site. If something must change, test it on staging first.
Diwali week: stay watchful
- Set up uptime monitoring. UptimeRobot's free plan checks your site every five minutes and alerts you on email or Telegram if it goes down.
- Watch stock levels. Nothing annoys a customer more than paying for something that turns out to be out of stock. Make sure inventory syncs correctly if you also sell on marketplaces.
- Keep your developer on call. Agree in advance that someone is reachable during peak days, especially the evenings. Settle this now, not at 10 pm on Dhanteras.
- Check orders daily. Look for failed payments, stuck "pending" orders and anything odd. A sudden spike in failed payments usually points to a gateway or plugin issue you can catch early.
After Diwali: don't waste the traffic
Once the rush is over:
- Send a thank-you message (with consent) and a small offer for the next purchase
- Ask happy customers for Google reviews while the experience is fresh
- Look at your GA4 data: which products, pages and channels actually sold?
- Note what went wrong, so next year's checklist is shorter
Then lift the freeze and catch up on updates, carefully, with a backup first.
The one-page version
- Hosting can handle festive traffic; CDN in place
- Everything updated, then frozen two weeks before Diwali
- Backups automated, off-server, and restore tested
- Key pages load fast on mobile
- Test orders placed with every payment method, on mobile data
- Payment gateway limits and KYC confirmed
- Pincode checker and Diwali delivery cut-off shown
- Coupons tested with limits and expiry (timezone: Asia/Kolkata)
- Festive landing page and corporate gifting page live
- Purchase tracking verified in GA4, Meta and Google Ads
- FAQ and quick replies ready
- Uptime monitoring on; developer on call for peak days
