Business Website Development in India: 12 Must-Haves

An Indian business website needs different things from a US one: WhatsApp, UPI, Hindi, fast 4G loading, GST details. Here are the 12 must-haves we build into every site.

Most website advice online is written for American businesses. It tells you to add a live chat widget, a newsletter popup and a "Book a Demo" button. That's fine in California. But your customer in Lucknow or Ghaziabad is more likely to want to WhatsApp you, check whether you accept UPI, and see your shop on Google Maps before they trust you with ₹5,000.

Business website development in India has its own checklist. These are the twelve things we build into almost every business site, and the reason each one matters here.

1. A WhatsApp button that actually works

If you do one thing from this list, do this one. Indian customers are far more comfortable sending a WhatsApp message than filling in a form. A floating click-to-chat button on mobile, with a pre-filled message like "Hi, I found you on your website and want to know about…", can bring in more enquiries than your contact page.

Two details people miss:

  • Use the wa.me/91XXXXXXXXXX link format with the country code, no plus sign, no spaces.
  • Make sure the number is actually monitored. A WhatsApp button that leads to a number nobody checks is worse than having none.

If you get lots of messages, the WhatsApp Business app (free) gives you quick replies and labels. When it gets beyond that, you can automate the first reply. We'll cover that in a separate post.

2. Tap-to-call on mobile

Plenty of Indian customers still prefer to call, especially older buyers and B2B clients. Your phone number should be a tel: link, so one tap dials it. Put it in the header on mobile, not hidden in the footer.

3. Loads fast on a budget phone over 4G

Your customer probably isn't on office Wi-Fi with a laptop. More likely they're on a ₹10,000–₹15,000 Android phone, on Jio or Airtel 4G, in a lift or a moving auto. If the page takes five seconds to load, they'll leave.

As a rough target, aim for the main content to appear in under 2.5 seconds on mobile (Google calls this Largest Contentful Paint). Test on PageSpeed Insights using the mobile tab, not desktop. If you're on WordPress and the score is red, our guide on WordPress Core Web Vitals walks through the fixes.

4. Your address, and a Google Map that matches your Business Profile

For local businesses, your website and your Google Business Profile should back each other up. Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on both (SEO people call this NAP consistency). Embed the map for your real location, and link to the Profile so people can read your reviews.

Small differences matter more than you'd expect. "Sector 62, Noida" on the website and "Sec-62, Gautam Buddh Nagar" on Google is the kind of mismatch that quietly weakens local rankings. Our local SEO guide for Indian businesses goes deeper on this.

5. Prices, or at least a price range

Indian buyers compare. A lot. If your website says "Contact us for pricing" on everything, many visitors will assume you're expensive and move on to someone who shows a number.

You don't have to publish a full rate card. "Starting from ₹X" or "Most projects fall between ₹X and ₹Y" is enough to keep people reading. It also filters out enquiries that were never going to fit your budget, which saves you time on the phone.

6. Payment options Indian customers trust

If you take payments online, show the options clearly: UPI, cards, net banking, and EMI where it makes sense. Razorpay, PhonePe PG, Cashfree and PayU are the common gateways. Look up each one's current fees before you choose, because pricing and UPI charges change.

Even if you don't sell online, a line like "We accept UPI, bank transfer and cheque" on your contact or pricing page answers a question people are too shy to ask.

7. GST number and legal details in the footer

For B2B especially, a visible GSTIN, registered business name and address make you look like a real company and not a fly-by-night operation. Businesses check this before they place an order.

While you're in the footer, add a privacy policy, terms and a refund policy. Payment gateways need these before they'll approve your account. With India's Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act now in force, you should also be clear about what you do with the phone numbers and emails your forms collect. Your CA or lawyer can advise on the exact wording, but don't leave these pages blank.

8. Hindi (or your regional language), where it makes sense

Not every business needs a bilingual site. But if your customers are local shoppers, patients, parents or farmers, a Hindi or regional version of your key pages can make a real difference. Google search in Hindi is growing, and there's far less competition for it.

Start small. Translate your home page and your top two services properly. Get a human to check it. Machine translation that reads awkwardly hurts trust more than it helps.

9. Real photos of real people

Stock photos of smiling models in a glass office don't fool anyone, least of all Indian customers who've seen the same image on fifty other websites. Photos of your actual team, your shop, your factory floor or your clinic build far more trust, even if they're shot on a phone.

A few tips for phone photos: shoot in daylight, clean the lens, and keep the background tidy. Then compress the images before upload (WebP format, under 200 KB each) so they don't slow the site down.

10. Proof: reviews, clients, certifications

Indians trust recommendations. Show what you've got:

  • Google reviews (embed them, or link to them)
  • Logos of clients you've worked with, with their permission
  • ISO, MSME/Udyam, industry body or government registrations
  • Years in business, if it's a strong number

Never make these up. Fake testimonials are easy to spot, and once a customer catches one, they won't believe anything else on the site.

11. A contact form that doesn't lose enquiries

Forms fail silently more often than you'd think. The site's email goes to spam, or the hosting mail server stops sending, and nobody notices for weeks. Every business site should:

  • Send form entries to an email you actually check, and save them somewhere (Google Sheet, CRM, or the site's database)
  • Have spam protection that doesn't annoy real users. A honeypot field or Cloudflare Turnstile works better than those "click all the traffic lights" CAPTCHAs.
  • Show a clear "Thank you, we'll call you within X hours" message after submitting

Test your own form once a month. It takes a minute.

12. Tracking so you know what's working

Set up Google Analytics 4 and Search Console on the day you launch, not six months later. Track form submissions, WhatsApp clicks and phone taps as conversions. Without them you won't know if the site is bringing in business, and you'll have no data when you want to improve it.

We explain the few numbers worth watching in GA4 and Search Console: the metrics that matter.

What you can safely skip

Just as important: things that sound good but rarely pay off for Indian small businesses.

  • Live chat widgets. Your customers already have WhatsApp. A chat widget nobody answers makes you look absent.
  • Newsletter popups on the first visit. Most people just close them.
  • Heavy sliders and video backgrounds. They look impressive on the designer's screen and slow everything down on mobile.
  • A "News" section you'll update twice. An empty blog from 2023 looks worse than no blog.

Quick checklist

Save this and go through it with your developer:

  • WhatsApp click-to-chat button with the right number
  • Tap-to-call phone number in the mobile header
  • Loads in under 2.5 seconds on mobile (PageSpeed mobile tab)
  • Address and phone match your Google Business Profile exactly
  • Prices or price ranges shown
  • Payment methods listed (UPI, cards, bank transfer)
  • GSTIN, legal name, privacy policy, terms, refund policy
  • Hindi or regional-language pages, if your audience needs them
  • Real photos, compressed to WebP
  • Genuine reviews and client proof
  • Contact form tested, entries saved outside email
  • GA4 + Search Console with conversions tracked

Building yours

None of these twelve things is expensive on its own. What matters is remembering all of them, and that's usually where DIY sites and budget builds fall short. If you're planning a new business website, or you think your current one is missing half of this list, have a look at our web development services or send us your current URL. We'll tell you honestly what's missing, with no obligation.
